R.I.P. Gil Scott-Heron

Many say that Gil Scott-Heron, along with The Last Poets, was the 'Godfather of Rap music'.
He's quoted as saying "I just think they made a mistake".
Either way, he was one of the most important social voices in the history of modern music.
If you don't know, please get to know.

Classic Material 1993

Chris Read is back with the seventh installment of his Classic Material mixtape series; focusing on the year 1993. Every month Classic Material host a club night focusing on a year of hip hop where the deejays only spin from that year and then Chris bangs out a mix dedicated ... It's a Sick Night!

Edition #7 of the monthly Classic Material series pays tribute to the hip hop of 1993, a year which many consider the pinacle of the so called early 90s golden era. Sampling and production techniques honed during the early 90s had reached a natural maturity by 1993 with key golden era producers such as Pete Rock and the Beatnuts establishing their own trademark sounds. The East Coast also ushered in a new harder edged sound with Wu Tang and Onyx both delivering gritty debuts. On the West Coast, the ‘G Funk’ sound which found its feet the year prior delivered arguably its most accomplished album in the form of Snoop’s seminal LP, Doggy Style. 1993 was also a great year for emerging undergound acts carving out their own sound, Souls of Mischief being a notable example.
Nothing but 93' boom bap stylee.... COP DIS SHIT

The Nextmen Streetfest Podcast...

With the Festival season approaching we are pumped about a summer spent in a field feeling slightly disorientated. So, to kick off the months of road trips, sunny speaker stacks, hands up boozy bashment, dirty dress-ups (props to the gingerbread men crew - Big Chill '09!), massive beats, manky trenches, lost mates/new mates & 8am wasteman bacon sarnie quests - The Nextmen thought they would make this episode of the podcast series a little special.

So here's a wee dram to tickle the buds with bangers from The Beastie Boys, Serocee, Zed Bias, Maya Jane Coles, Netsky, Foreign Beggars, Toddla T and DJ Fresh amongst others. Check The Nextmen out in a field on a stage near you & in the very least, let their  lil podcast soundtrack your ride there or dark & grimey amble home.

It's summer! About bleedin' time! StreetFest is the first and only live art street festival in UK. It takes place on Sunday May 29th at Hearn St Car Park, Shoreditch, London. It's A Vivrant Thing...

Twelve years on from the 'Amplified' album that championed the tune in the first place , comes Jazzy Jen's Remix of the club banger 'Vivrant Thing'. Jens brings the sample that inspired the track (Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra's "I Wanna Stay") to the forefront, trading thumping bass for the more popular strings-heavy sound of the day (1975). A solid mixture of both sides of the Barry White original and the Q-Tip version makes this a wicked lil bubbler.. The bit rate aint too tuff but the best I got..

Keep The Cipher Complete...

Being an addict for sneakers, I saw this tune by Mac Miller and I had a listen. I hadn't really heard him before but he's kicking around with Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa so he must be good. Turns out he's all good. Bit of a guilty pleasure in regard to my love for kicks but wicked mixtape material..

Skate, Street, Hip Hop, Neo Soul Singer Mayer Hawthorne has released a free collection of cover songs for the web. The collection, released on Stones Throw is called 'Impressions' and the download link is below, followed by Mayer’s track by track descriptions.

1. Work To Do
This one features my live band, The County: Quentin Joseph on drums, Topher Mohr on guitar, Quincy McCrary on piano, and Joe Abrams on bass. It was recorded live in a radio station studio somewhere during our Winter 2010 US tour. The tapes recently surfaced, but nobody can remember exactly where we were. The song is originally by The Isley Brothers, and that’s the only version I was familiar with until we started playing it in our live shows and people would come up to us and say “hey, loved your cover of Average White Band!”.

2. Don’t Turn The Lights On
My favorite track from Chromeo’s latest LP. On the surface it’s an electro-funk, dance floor filler, but underneath is a brilliant love ballad with lyrics that reminded me of something from Tyrone Davis. Dave1 (of Chromeo) told me the song is about a guy who falls in love with a ghost, so I wanted my version to have an eerie, ghostly feel to it. Quincy McCrary played the creepy piano solo at the end.

3. You’ve Got The Makings Of A Lover
Textbook Northern Soul from a little known Dallas, Texas group called The Festivals. I was digging for records in NY with my homey DJ Kurse, and the shopkeeper played the 45 in the store. Both of us immediately ran up to the counter and said “yo! what is THAT?!”. The original version was recorded in the late 60s, and the mix isn’t very good. I wanted a version that I could bump. Quentin Joseph played the drums and we recorded them at Sam Beaubien’s studio in Detroit. That’s Sam playing the trumpet as well.

4. Fantasy Girl
This song was written and composed by an amazing man from Pasadena named Steve Salazar. He was born with a heart condition and passed away at the young age of 27. Before he died he recorded one incredible album of demos in the mid-70s with a band called Shorty’s Portion. Peanut Butter Wolf found a copy of the album and I loved it so much that he gave it to me (thanks Wolf!). The vinyl had a handwritten note tucked in the sleeve that was addressed to anyone who could help the band with management, a record deal, radio airplay, etc. I’d estimate there were less than 300 copies pressed. That’s my Dad playing pedal steel guitar and Topher Mohr shredding the guitar solo on my version.

5. Little Person
Jon Brion is not from this planet. He penned this song for the soundtrack to Charlie Kaufman’s film “Synecdoche, NY”. I didn’t get the film at all, but I really got the soundtrack. The original has only female vocal and piano, but I always heard a larger arrangement. Hubert Alexander played some of the piano and I did everything else.

6. Mr. Blue Sky
This one also features my band, The County, and was recorded live, in one take, in a tiny makeshift tent, at a festival in Dour, Belgium.

Some People Say

Fam for a minute now, Leaf Dog from the 3 Amigos has stayed on his grind long as I've known him, smashing open mics and hosting shows across Bristol, Bath & the South-West, for Hi-Fidelity, Beat Pimps & StoneGruve Social (BobaFatt's previous home of night-spot Hip Hop activity) amongst many others.

The grind is clearly paying off - hyped as Hip Hop Connection magazine's "one to watch" a while back, his beats catching the ears of genuine Hip Hop legends such as Kool G Rap, and drafting in mic duties from the likes of Diamond D, Verb T & Rampage, for his forthcoming album,
'From A Scarecrow's Perspective', out soon on High Focus.

Go the fuck in Leafy..

If you say you like Hip Hop, and you DON'T download this mixtape, then you're probably a bit of a chief.

The Jet Life...

Trademark Da Skydiver and Young Roddy might have been around and making waves prior to the release of Curren$y's Pilot Talk. But it was that album and their features on "Roasted" that introduced them to a wider audience. And that audience began catching on to their blunted, storytelling ways, both as guests again for Curren$y on Pilot Talk II and on their own. In particular, Trademark began turning heads with his Super Villain Issue 3: Reign Supreme project that dropped last year.

And over the past few weeks, Trademark and Roddy have been releasing a series of well-received tracks with no indication of a final resting place -- sort of like how 50 Cent has been doing. That changed recently, though, when they teamed up with production duo Cookin' Soul to craft Jet Life to the Next Life. Outfitted with jazzy original production, Trademark and Roddy show off why their more than just capable guest MCs while Curren$y makes a few scattered appearances.

Whateva the weather, this is dope music
