So the story go, this beat was s'posed to end up on Jay Z's 'Blueprint 3' album, but it came through too late for the production deadline.
So Primo gave it to Freddie Foxx instead.

Blue Sky...

Winter is officially upon us - don't mean we can't be lookin' for blue skies..

From his forthcoming ninth studio album 'The Dreamer / The Believer', Common is back with this No iD produced joint, sampling Electric Light Orchestra's 'Mr Blue Sky' (my old man used to RINSE that tune back in the day, beleee me!).

Following on from 'Ghetto Dreams' earlier in the year, which featured Nas, this album's sounding like it's gonna be nice, for real..

Rapping With Paul White - Remix EP...

Given that Paul White makes approximately 13,432 beats a day, it seems only fair that we should give you this one for free as a gesture of thanks for making his recent album so successful.
Paul remixed six tracks from his recent 'Rapping With...' album, slipped in five outstanding new instrumentals and an interlude, and there we have it. What's more, three of these remixes feature Paul White playing live, no samples. We'll leave you to figure out which one.
We should also mention that the 'Rapping With...' album is also now available on one of those Compact Disc things. You can purchase that HERE.

Salute To Jimmy...

In Disc Jockey terms, Jimmy Saville will be remembered as a true legend in the game.

For those of us that grew up in the 80's, he'll be remembered for making dreams come true for the lucky chosen ones on Saturday night TV, on Jim'll Fix It. For others, he might be remembered as that geeza that Louis Theroux did a programme about, smoking cigars and doing marathons.

Preceding all that, in 1964 he was the very first presenter on the UK's longest running music TV programme, Top Of The Pops - effectively making him the first superstar DJ in Britain.

He laid various claims over the years, about being the person to come up with the concept of using two turntables, rather than one, for continuous back to back music in dancehalls, subsequently inventing the disco in the late 1940's, revolutionizing the way that we all still put it down today.
The night in question was called the Grand Records Ball (if that ain't a pimp daddy OG name for a club night, I'm fecked if I know what is..)

This particular claim is disputed by a few people obviously - the concept of using twin decks had already been conceptualized by Jim's own former employees, the BBC, in the late 1920's - but there's no doubt that he was definitely one of the first people in the world to rock it with two turntables and a mic, at public dances.

Here's a tribute from Sky News earlier on today, from the Daddy of DMC, Tony Prince...

Jimmy's life long charity work saw that he was knighted in the early 70's and proceeded to always sign off as O.B.E. from then on - gangster.

He would've been 85 years old on Monday.

Jimmy, we at Main Squeeze salute you.
Rest in power, sir.

Sir James Vincent Wilson Saville OBE

DJ Premier was given Classical and began his immersion into the genre with Bruce Adolphe, a former classical music professor at Juilliard. They met at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music not far from DJ Premier’s home in NY. After learning about classical music theory, the inspirations of some of the genre’s most profound composers and how traditional pieces are structured, DJ Premier went out and bought tons of classical symphonies on vinyl to mash up his own creation. We then took that mash-up and orchestrated it for sheet music. In the first step of the actual recording process, DJ Premier partnered with Stephen Webber, a professor and conductor at the Berklee College of Music. Steven taught Premier how to conduct and helped him in studio with the 58-piece Berklee Symphony Orchestra you hear on the track. Of all the takes, the one you hear is the “wild” version (which means they recorded it without the metronome in their headphones) DJ Premier conducted himself. Then DJ Premier brought that instrumental track back home to NY and Nas laid down his rhyme on top of it.

Lana Del Remix... (Odd Future / Woon)

The latest lady to be blessed with the "internet hype of the moment award" is New Yorker, Lana Del Rey.

There's been a shitload of remixes & covers emerging over the past few weeks of her 'Blue Jeans / Video Games' single, everyone from Joy Orbison to Bombay Bicycle Club, but these are the two I'm personally feeling the most.

Odd Future's DJ & First Lady, Syd The Kyd, has flipped 'Blue Jeans' into a Future R&B style-cut to great effect, while the one like Jamie Woon picks up the pace of 'Video Games', and plays with the vocal pitch in a James Blake / Jamie XX stylee...

What You Feelin? Chris P Cuts

This week we caught up with the every busy Chris P Cuts... He has been Main Squeeze Fam for a minute and has smacked a few of our parties to date... The question was.. 'What You Feelin?'

Great LP from Toddla. This is the stand out tune for me. Mic duties from Wayne Marshall and co produced by Skream. Big tune and the vids ill too!

These guys smashed the set at Gullyver couple of months back. They went on to drop Piff Breaks & 808’s. Love this one. Check the whole release,

Big tune! Took me a minute to by pass the Kendrick hype and listen to some of his releases properly. This one’s produced by Nosaj Thing. Nosaj been smashing crazy electronic sounds out for the last couple of years. The two sounds work perfect on this track. Had this one on repeat for a while now.

Roots Manuva’s new LP 4everevolution is bananas. Best body of work he’s released for a long time. This tune smashes it both in the club and the ipod.  Go buy the LP. You will not be dissappointed.

Taken from the Crash Course 2 mixtape with Stylah & Snips. Loved the first mixtape these too put together couple of years back. Stylah’s voice sounds great over Snips production. Hope to hear a full LP with these two real soon. For now cop the mixtape here:

A Feast Of Beats!

I make beats, so I thought I would shamelessly plug them on here.
Have a listen!

EP coming soon of more future disco/ boogie like this!

The Orders, Main Squeeze & present Sampled
9pm-4am Saturday 3rd December 2011 @ Bar Music Hall, 134 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3AR
Tickets £5 in advance for day time sample sale & club night. £7 on the door.

With DJ's
Mark Rae (Rae & Christian / Grand Central)
Andy Smith (Early Portishead breaks set)
Mr Thing (Extended Players)
Spin Doctor (The Doctor’s Orders)
Mo Fingaz (Main Squeeze)
BobaFatt (Main Squeeze)

Sampled is quite simply all about the Sample with a two-day Sample Sale and record fare featuring many of the world’s hottest streetwear brands and record dealers split by this party featuring an incredible line up of DJs playing original breaks and the tunes that they built.

At the route of all Hip-Hop and House music is the sample. Be it some drums lifted from a James Brown classic, a little horns from a Miles Davis gem or a whole chuck of string laden sound taken from a 70’s Disco stomper this is the art of modern dance music and we are breaking it down for you as we explore all fashions of Sampled and Sampling music on a break to the beat journey with some of the very best DJs in the land.

Mark Rae rose to fame through his work as one half of Rae & Christian. After a stint on the other side of the pond making music for movies he is back in Blightly and joining us for a chance to rip up the rule book and go all out on dance-floor assault.

Andy Smith is warming the party up with an early set part of which will all be original sampled he used in his time with the legendary Portishead. A funk, soul & reggae aficionado this will be sure to get the place up to boiling point.

Mr Thing is not only one of the best and most respected DJs on the planet but also one of the most avid breaks collectors in the world so there is no way this event was happening without him. Combining his encyclopedic knowledge of samples and is impeccable skills on the decks means this is a sure fire hit.

Spin Doctor, top cat at London's biggest hip hop night. The Doctor's Orders is known for pushing the boat out and tonight while not completely turning his back on his Hip-Hop roots will be digging that little deeper for a set of classic Disco breaks that have been used to fill House clubs for years.

Main Squeeze’s DJs Mo Fingaz & BobaFatt have been causing something of a stir since starting their parties 2 years ago. Both are exceptional DJs with an eye for the dance-floor and eye for the breaks so you will be in safe hands.

In 2013....

The DeLorean Motor Company is to put an all-electric version of its iconic, time-travelling retro motor into production by 2013. The manufacturer showed off the first prototype at the DMC Texas Open House Event earlier this month.
Built in collaboration with electric start-up Epic EV, the new car -- dubbed DMCEV -- is expected to pack 260 horsepower and a top speed of 125 mph. Inside you'll find a full leather look to the minimalist interior, a built-in GPS display and an iPhone dock. No flux capacitor is included, sadly.

Where the battery pack will end up (the classic DeLorean DMC-12 already fills the boot with its engine) is anyone guess, but the first photographs of the all-electric car show that one feature is still very much intact: those audacious gull-wing doors.

When the electric DeLorean goes on sale in 2013 it will cost $90,000 to $100,000. (£57k to £63k). Great scott.

Random Axe @ Scala...

Random Axe -  Sean Price x Black Milk x Guilty Simpson

Plus support from
Jehst LIVE
DJs: Mr Thing, Spin Doctor, The Last Skeptik  & DJ Rags.  Hosted by Iron Braydz

8pm - Midnight // Thursday 20th October 2011 @ The Scala, Pentonville Road, London N1 9NL
£17.00 in advance // MOTD (if available) TICKETS HERE

Random Axe is the super-group comprised of Sean Price, Black Milk & Guilty Simpson. They mark their self titled debut album (Duck Down Music), entirely produced by Black Milk, with their very first UK show. Comprising of three of the most incredible talents in Hip-Hop today this is sure to be one of the most highly anticipated shows and sought after tickets in capital.

Sean Price, born & raised in Brooklyn, NY, is one of Duck Down’s most popular artists. Having risen to fame as part of Heltah Skeltah & Boot Camp Click he's developed a cult-like following since the release of his solo albums 'Monkey Barz' & 'Jesus Price Supastar,' + consistent mix cd releasees dating back to 2006.

Black Milk the producer/MC from Detroit, Michigan is regarded by many as the future of Hip-Hop. He's already produced records for J Dilla, Slum Village, Pharoahe Monch, GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Bilal, Little Brother, KRS-One & Buckshot as well as his own three critically acclaimed albums (Popular Demand, Tronic & Album of the Year). This will be Black Milk’s third show with The Doctor’s Orders so we all know what to expect and trust me we can’t wait.

Guilty Simpson, also a product of Detroit and a favourite of The Doctor’s Orders, has released two critically acclaimed albums on Stones Throw Records. He is known as one of J Dilla's favourites and it is little wonder why.  With his last album "OJ Simpson" entirely produced by Madlib there are few underground MCs so in demand as this hugely talented lyricist.

Supporting this A list of US MCs is one of the most popular and impressive MCs in the UK Jehst. Performing for the first time in London since he celebrated the release of his 4th full length album “The Dragon of an Ordinary Family” with The Doctor’s Orders back in June this is the perfect way to get the place up to boiling point. Responsible for warming things up are a dream team of London’s best party DJs in the shape of Spin Doctor, Mr Thing, The Last Skeptik & DJ Rags.

UK Great...

He is still one of the UK's greatest.... Wish I coulda been there. Props to Reb Bull for an amazing idea...

From XXL Mag:- Plans for a Will Smith comeback album have yet to be solidified, but has learned that the Oscar-nominated-rapper-turned-actor has logged in studio time with his longtime friend and collaborator, DJ Jazzy Jeff.

“He came down like two weeks ago and was like, ‘Yo, I wanna get back into the studio, and we just knocked out some stuff,” Jeff told XXL. “I just think more than anything there is no set pattern, no set plan, but we just wanna go into the studio and see what we come out with. If I can get it back to the way we used to make music, you know, it used to be just me and him in the room. You don’t need no entourages and cameras and all of that and see what happens. He hasn’t decided exactly what he wants to do.”

Top Boy

Top Boy is a soon come drama on Channel 4 starring UK MC's Ashley Walters (Asher D of So Solid Fame) & Kane Robinson (Kano) as they are followed for 4 consecutive days over a 4 part documentary drama about the life and grime of living on the Summerhouse Estate in East London. It follows the boys as they drive the underground scene and we see how it affects the people around them. UK MC Scorcher leads the way as the villain in the drama. certainly gonna be controversial with Walters involved...

Props to SX for the Woo Riddim.. Still a classic.....

Gimme A Break.......

Haven't posted one of these in a while, so I thought I would do a nice uptempo party tune.

This Leon Sylvers produced gem from The Whispers. Amazing production and such a banging tune.

Taken by the Paris resident Onra has been digging up these boogie and disco samples for a while now, like most of the content on his last full LP Long Distance.

Hip Hop Heads

London-based freelance designer and illustrator Dale Edwin Murray has created this great series of 14 different hip hop artist heads, 13 of which we knew immediately. Can you guess all 14 in one sweep? Watch out for prints soon...

Legend In My Own Mind...

Stones Throw
continue on from the immense heat they provided with Aloe Blacc's 'Good Thing' album, with some more of that raw uncut Soul music, this time from the group The Stepkids, a group of three seasoned session musicians from the East Coast.
Not a reissue, not "Neo", just some good ol' fashioned psychedelic Soul music, made right here in 2011.

I recommend y'all pick their self-titled album up now. Really beautiful stuff.

This video's got a real nice retro vibe to it too, featuring Kristen Schaal's comedy partner Kurt Braunohler, riding the tube like an 80s b-boy.

RIP Bert Jansch

On the Hip Hop journey we travel in many directions. We hear that beat that makes your neck snap, when we find out that all of this neck snapping comes from other peoples music we then begin the journey back in time as well as forward to the future.

When discovering all these records that were sampled and interpolated and referenced, we begin to widen our horizons and find new things and we also begin to have an understanding and appreciation for music we never thought we would.

On my journey through finding records and music I have gone through all sorts of genres and styles. So although this post might not feel very "Hip Hop" I think this can relate as much as anything else.

I would never have found this band that I love so much if I hadn't taken that journey through music.

Rest in peace Bert Jansch.
