One of the great players in this rap game, Chris Lighty managed a whole bunch of the greats.
Hugely respected in the industry, he worked his way up from the street, carrying crates for DJ Red Alert, to be mentored by Russell Simmons & Lyor Cohen, to eventually become a man responsible for serious power moves, shaping the careers and striking big deals for some of the biggest Hip Hop artists in the world, as part of his own management firm Violator, and working with every major label in Hip Hop at some point, with artists such as Nas, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest, 50 Cent, LL Cool J and beyond.
In his own words recently, on his twitter page: "Hip Hop, your blueprint generation is passing away. Embrace them now. It's now or never".
The dubious nature of his alleged suicide will no doubt be discussed for some time. His importance in the game will remain unquestioned.
He was 44 years old.
Rest in power Chris.
