Nukey...

UK Hip Hop heads Rewd Adams and DJ/Producer The Last Skeptik release the first leak from their stupendously anticipated forthcoming album ‘How Not To Make A Living’.
'Nukey' is an ode to the real shit. Heavy drum break and synths from Skep, and Rewd channeling his inner Big Daddy Kane via the hardcore ferocity of Blade. It’s the opener of the album, and a perfect introduction of the two lads and their bi-polar tendencies.

'Nukey' will be released as a B-Side of the single 'Everything's OK', out on iTunes, and all good digital music outlets on May 7th, 2012.

Be Inspired

21222726 by YardieGoals

2011 the world saw the loss of a great Hip-Hop legend “Heavy D” The life of the rapper and music producer who gained the respect of the entire HipHop scene throughout his career has now been recollected by artists who have been influenced by him in their career in a new documentary Be Inspired: The Life of Heavy D.
A sufferer of deep leg vein thrombosis, Heavy D died on November 8, 2011 in Los Angeles, California, aged 44, from a blood clot in his lung, after collapsing outside his home in Beverley Hills. His final words on Twitter: “Be Inspired.”

In the documentary, aired by Centric, we see the likes of Queen Latifah, Big Boy, Al B. Sure!, Mary J. Blige, Will Smith, Nia Long, Cee-Lo Green, Russell Simmons and more reflecting on the life of the inspirational artist narrated by MC Lyte.
The film also includes coverage of his funeral services in his native Mount Vernon, NY, with original score by acclaimed musician and composer George Duke..

Swang 2

Volume 2 of a series of 60 minute mixes by BobaFatt, looking back at the time when Hip Hop and R&B first hooked up and formed that "Swang".
New Jack Swing. Swingbeat. Hip Hop R&B Soul. Call it what you will..

Haircuts were high, slanted, faded and cut with 163 tramlines minimum, clothes were hella baggy, trainers were extra extra fly, and everyone knew how to do the running man. Everyone.

Teddy Riley pretty much ran everything, LA & Babyface had a good punt, and producers like Jam & Lewis occasionally dipped their toe in too.

Snares were tough, preset orchestra hit noises were compulsory and the vibes were lovely.
Yep yep.

It went a lil' sum'n like this. Swang it!...

Boiler Doom...

So, I was privileged enough the other night to be one of a few to witness something pretty special.

The Boiler Room crew have found themselves a new home, and for their first event there, they brought in the Lex Records crew to do their thing. Buddy Peace (rocking CDJ's like an MPC.. badman!..) & Boom Bip (on an unexpected 4/4 tip) got the spot popping nicely, then the one like DOOM turned up and laced his 60 minute selection on us.

Public Enemy, Shabazz Palaces, Gza, KMD, curveballs like Dirty Beaches and a whole heap of other shit. Quick as he came into the building, he left soon as the set was done. Only other DJ set I've heard of him doing he apparently played one joint and left. I dunno if that's true or not..
Either way, seriously seriously dope night.

You can listen back to the set HERE or go to the link below.
Visuals to follow soon (I think)...

Shout to my Rough Trade family, Thristian & the BR crew and all the heads I saw up inside.

Hanging On A String...

One of the greatest UK Soul tracks ever gets revisited.
Sick acoustic version from Mr Loose Ends himself, Carl Mcintosh.

Recorded 17th February 2012 at Arc Theatre, The Malthouse Studios, Barking.

Serato Projection Mapping

Shout to my boy Scutler for discovering this one. Potential for this idea is pretty crazy...

"This is a projection mapping project we've been working on for about a month as of uploading.
It's a user interface for Serato Scratch Live that is vinyl rotation reactive, as well as sound reactive, and makes it possible to mix using Serato without having to look at your computer screen whatsoever. We Have Real time Waveforms Streaming across our mixers, or our vinyl platters, and we have started to incorporate video effects that are controlled by wii remotes. We are also working on controlling effects with motion capturing using a camera."

Running...

I'm in love with Jessie Ware a bit. This track, produced by Brizzle producer Julio Bashmore, is not helping change this any. Bad...

What Type Of Drug?...

“Following on from his incredible ‘Digmund Freud’ & ‘F.D.T’ EPs in 2010, UK Hip-Hop legend Mystro is back with ‘What Type Of Drug Is Mystrogen?’, which is being given out for free in line with the release of his highly anticipated full-length debut LP ‘Mystrogen’, that is set to drop later this year. The EP sees MysDiggi at his lyrical best, with a witty thought-provoking concept, backed by flawless production from the likes of Black Einstein, DJ Thor & Mark de Clive-Lowe. During a time where watered down Hip-Hop (minus Wretch) is what’s accepted as the norm in the mainstream, this EP is the genre in its purest form and something that all music lovers will truly appreciate – hypnotic neck-breaking beats, real rhymes from the heart and a flow that is simply untouchable. After the jump you can catch ‘That There’, which is produced by Twisted Roots, but if you’re wondering what type of drug Mystrogen is, you should probably just click and find out for yourself. Happy listening…

Aint No Love...

A lil treat from The Milk. In the ages of bands shining thru in the hip hop world, The Milk thought it would only be right to do a lil ditty covering Jay-Z's - Aint No Love (Heart Of The City) And a sterling job they did...

Shouts to The Milk and Big Man Baloo... You know know how we do.

The Tight Face

Main Squeeze via Big Man Duppy over @ProgPorn are extremely proud to present the new immaculately well crafted beat tape from One Handed Music affiliate and younger brother of Mo Kolours, Tightface. Previously on Squeeze we repped TightFace's first beat tape, 'Treasure's Of The Five Boroughs' which you can cop HERE. MPC Tomfoolery at its best....

Tightface hails from the Saaaauuuuffff East of LDN and has been honing his silky MPC skills for many years now. His latest offering is complete FYA. Heavy heavy heavy drums with mind boggling sample trickery all bring this slice of fried gold together for an extremely delectable listening experience. Crisply mixed together and fully produced by the man himself. Listen out for some of his bro's (Mo Kolours) vocals on a couple of joints as well.

Family since back in the day, when we went school and shit.......It's a pleasure to get round 2 from TightFace. In my opinon its been along time since last year, and we always want to hear more from the Mauritian crusaders...

Remember you heard it hear second....
Big Love & Props to Tight Face, Mo Kolours and Duppy... Each & Every!

DāM-FunK - Prince Mix

For Wax Poetics magazine's ten-year anniversary, and to coincide with their 50th Issue (heavily featuring the short purple obsessed one)
DāM-FunK (Stones Throw) created an exclusive Prince DJ mix, also throwing in a brand new DāM-FunK track.

This reeks of nasty sleazy dirty soiled Funk bad.
I need to go have a shower or something now.
I can't go outside stanking like this.
...Too much?...

Questlove - Dilla Mix

This month marks the sixth anniversary of the death of a true hip-hop legend, James "J Dilla/Jay Dee" Yancey. And as some of y'all might be aware, he was very close friends with Questlove, of The Roots. They worked together on numerous projects, many times as part of the Soulquarians collective that also features Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and other supreme talents. So to show his love for his late friend, Questo took to Hot97 studios to perform a live DJ set dedicated to Dilla. It's more than an hour's worth of Dilla-related material

Remember kids, wear a hat, it's cold outside...

Happy Valentines Day.

Salute To Whitney...

No long ting. There's been enough chat on the internet about this.

Tragic she went before her time, no doubt.
One of the iconic voices of a generation, no doubt.

I saw her at Wembley Arena when I was a yout in the late 80's.
She was real good.

Despite whatever "they" say, I still like Bobby Brown. Who knows what's really good unless you're sat in a room with them for 15 years, right?...

Plenty of joints I could've posted, 'My Love Is Your Love', 'I'm Your Baby Tonight', 'It's Not Right But It's Ok'...

I did a mash-up of 'Wanna Dance With Somebody' a few years ago.

I could put up the 'Sexual Chocolate' cover of 'Greatest Love Of All' from 'Coming To America'.

Or a little Japanese dude singing 'I Will Always Love You' note perfect.

I could tell you about the family connects with Cissie, Dionne and Aretha..

But yo. You know where Wikipedia's at. You know where YouTube's at.

This is the first joint I remember hearing from Whitney when I was a kid.
It's still one of my favourites.

Happy Valentines Day.

Rest in peace Miss Houston x

Salute To The Don...

For those that don't know, Chicago born Don Cornelius was the host and creator of legendary US music programme 'Soul Train'.

Years before the likes of MTV were around... sheiiiiiit... years and years before MTV even considered showcasing any black artists, Soul Train was a platform for a generation, giving much needed exposure to artists such as James Brown, Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin.
The mere thought of not giving those artists exposure these days seems insane. But it wasn't too long ago that wasn't the case at all. Don was a real movement in changing that.

Here's a set from the great Stevie Wonder on the show from 1971, doing a Q&A and performing a few tracks. Skip to around the 8:45 mark, to check Stevie's improvised jam for Soul Train and for the Don..

In the words of Don, Peace and Soul x
