Tanya Lacey...

Tanya Lacey is a multi-talented singer / emcee hailing from Bristol, who's also written / co-written hit singles for Loick Essien ('How We Roll') and Will I Am / Mick Jagger / Jennifer Lopez ('T.H.E. The Hardest Ever'), which ain't too shabby either.

She also featured on a track by our Hospital Records homie, Danny Byrd, on 'From Bath With Love'.

These are her joints so far.

She kills it on her own version of 'T.H.E.', and the vid to 'Born To Fly' is shot completely in Stokes Croft, Bristol.

Might be a bit poppy for some of y'all, but in my book she deserves to blow up, global. Bad. Get to know.

Shout to SB:TV.

O(mar) D. B...

While biopics on N.W.A. and Tupac have been talked about for a while now, and seem to be stuck in development, it looks like a movie about one of their contemporaries is not only moving forward, but has made a brilliant and bold casting choice: Michael K. Williams (aka Omar from "The Wire") will be playing Ol' Dirty Bastard in "Dirty White Boy." Fucking yes.

Back in 2009RZA was talking up a biopic and cautioned that the rapper's "estate is kind of confused on what to do, and all the rights and all that shit" but it appears everything has been worked out. Penned by Brent Hoff, the film will be the directorial debut of Joaquin Baca-Asay, the cinematographer behind James Gray's "Two Lovers," "We Own The Night" and Mike Mills' "Thumbsucker." He's also a commerical and music video director who was the DOP behind Mark Romanek's now-iconic video for Jay-Z's "99 Problems."

Describing the persona of ODB as a "character" played by Russell Tyrone Jones, there is no doubt he embraced some very real troubles, including legal battles over the child support for this 13 children, battling drug addiction, enduring numerous brushes with the law, and surviving a shooting as the result of an argument with another rapper. So there is some very real drama here that we hope isn't trivialized. That being said....

In the works for a few years and described as a "a time capsule, black comedy and love poem," the film will tell the story of ODB through the eyes of Jarred Weisfeld, a VH1 intern who became the rapper's manager (the writer Hoff berfriended them both when he too worked at VH1). Troublingly described as a cross between "Risky Business" and "8 Mile," there is a danger here of taking too light a touch with the story of ODB's life so we hope a proper tone is struck.

Michael K. Williams as the lead role is fucking awesome. A great stroke of casting and no matter how this turns out we'll be there to see him take on the role.

F*** Up The Fun...

For those that don't know, 20 year old Harlem rapper / singer Azealia Banks has been turning heads for a few months now, and recently signed a major label deal with Universal.
Warming up for that, here's a free lil' sum'n sum'n produced by Diplo, entitled 'Fuck Up The Fun'.
Azealia Banks’ debut album should land May / June time.
Providing that does happen, and the label don't long it off for a year or more (Kid Sister anyone?..) she will be absolutely massive, without a dizzout.
Shout to Soul Culture.

Mo Kolours | Banana Wine...

Our old homie Mo Kolours is back with some new heat once again on One Handed Music.
So proud of this dude. Each release keeps getting better & better.

Mo Kolours' new EP is an intoxicating blend of Soul, Dub, Hip Hop, House, Afro-Latin Percussion, Mauritian Sega music and much more. It's a real step forward from his first EP & should establish Mighty Joe Young as one of the most individual artists around.

For the analogue heads & purists, the 12" of this is out in good record shops (..cough cough.. Rough Trade...) now, with sick artwork from Swedish painter Ekta, & mastered by the peeps behind the likes of Burial, Actress & Skream.

However, enough chatter, the good good folks at One-Handed have decided they really just want everyone to hear it, so they're giving away the whole EP for nuffink RIGHT HERE.

Oh, he got a Facebook page now too.

Out March 27th, Stones Throw are dropping this ILL, ILL, ILL supergroup concept project thang.

A little while back, Katalsyt dropped this podcast - "The Hip Hop Quake Mix" - through Stones Throw to get the hype ball rolling, and this is in itself is ILL, ILL, ILL. A 40 minute mix showcasing their influences and some exclusive production, featuring OC, Joe Meek, Silver Apples, Death Grips, Gangstarr, Public Enemy and many more.

You can cop that shit HERE.

UCLA...

Bit of a controversial one this. Been on the blogosphere for a minute, but, can't front, almost slipped under my radar. That ain't the controversial bit though. The controversial bit is that this was allegedly a collab LP from Madlib & Blu (crazy heat!!), but now Stones Throw are amongst a few past few weeks claiming that Madlib didn't have nuttin' to do with it.. which has left this thing a little tainted with a few people... I don't know about all that. But what I do know is, regardless, this right here, is pretty dope. Whoever made it...

Born Ready To Die

In honor of Biggie's passing 15 years ago on March 9, 1997... Terry Urban wanted to do a special project. He & Mick Boogie honored the anniversary of his passing with a special project called Unbelievable, which was hosted by Sean "Diddy" Combs and exceded 500k downloads online.
But to pay tribute this time, he has done something different. .
Born Ready To Die. - The music from Lana Del Ray's Born To Die... remixed and resampled.  The lyrics from Biggie's Ready To Die... still timeless after all these years. It's a perfect marriage... dark and mysterious... soulful and gritty.

Lana told Vogue Magazine that Biggie was one of her biggest musical influences... and now... he is her musical collaborator.
I present to you... Born Ready To Die.

Do What You Can Kid...

I don't even know what to say 'bout this...

Nice & Smooth played at Jazz Cafe this weekend just gone, their first London gig since 1991.

Excelling expectations is an understatement. Two of the most charismatic, energetic dudes I've ever seen at a Hip Hop gig. It's no wonder they've been revered with such fondness throughout the Hip Hop community, for all these years.

The energy, the humour, the showmanship, the mother-fucking dancing, and the vibes from Greg Nice were second to none, rocking half the set amongst the crowd, beatbox breaks, crowd chants, the whole nine.

And the emotion and heart from Smooth B (shown in this video below) is something you rarely see from anyone, especially not on a stage, at a Hip Hop concert.

One of the illest gigs I've been to for a long long time. Hilarious, emotional and funky as fuck. Nice & Smooth forever. Word is bond.

Shout to Chocolate Bear TV for the clip.
Shout to the Scratch crew, Mr Thing, DJ LoK, Mystro and all the other heads that were in attendance last Sunday.

Never Gonna Change...

Reinterpreting Drake's track 'Closer To My Dreams', this is a teaser track for MCX's forthcoming mixtape 'Revels', produced largely by my actual factual real deal little brother Renoir aka Bigness As Usual.

The video was put together by Renoir (also known as Row P Vids) with MCX one snowy afternoon in Blazingsmoke.

'Revels' by MCX is released 30.04.12.
