Lo-Fi Instrumentals

Armed with a dusty SP-1200 and equally weathered records, Gensu Dean made a splash in the indie rap scene with his debut LP Lo-Fi Fingahz on Mello Music Group. The record was an uncompromising modern display of tradition—hardcore MC’s over hardcore beats, plain and simple. The project was a proud beacon for the old guard, a proclamation that hip-hop can grow but the roots will always be the foundation. Now Gensu and MMG are dropping the instrumentals for us.

Way In Way Out

Oddissee’s new full length LP, People Hear What They See, seems poised to cement its author as one of the elite MCs/producers in underground hip-hop. Mello Music Group is proud to let off the first leak with “Way In, Way Out" to celebrate the new album's official itunes debut today!

One of the shining aspects of Oddissee’s work has always been its implicit emphasis on inclusion rather than exclusion. In other words, while certain platinum selling artists might constantly reinforce how different he is than his audience, the DMV’s prodigal son’s bars come from a much more grounded place. “Way In, Way Out” opens with a robust brass line and a pounding kick to match. Oddissee waste’s no time painting an allegory exploring the gaping American divide between the truly wealthy and the rest of us, and the precarious cycles that emerge from it. Much like his synesthetic title suggests, Oddissee’s rhymes are vivid and visual.

Towards the end of the second verse, Oddissee integrates a bar from Jay-Z’s “Can’t Knock The Hustle” into a scathing analysis of the American justice system, seamlessly of course.  While he might not have the paper and popularity of Hov , there is something to be said about the level of mastery Oddissee has shown in so many aspects of underground hip-hop in a relatively short time. Far from being God but he works goddamn hard.

For Alex.

We're well versed on here for posting tributes when our musical heroes pass away.
People we don't know that touch and influence our lives in some way.

When someone we know in real life passes away, it cuts in a different way.

Alex Black was someone the majority of you reading this probably won't have known.
But it wouldn't be right to not put something on here about him.

In Bath's Hip Hop scene, which myself and Tarl were very much active in over the years, Alex was one of the unsung heroes.
Him and his partner, Ant, set up a night called Beat Pimps in the mid 00's, around the same time I set up StoneGruve Social.

We were never rivals - that's not how we rolled as promoters, and never have since.
We had the same brief, the same friends and tried to create a platform for the same people. To put on some great Hip Hop nights for the benefit of our respective crews, who were mostly previously ignored.

Numerous Hip Hopper's passed through Bath & Bristol through these two nights, and local DJs & MCs got to rock in front of home crowds, mostly for the first time.
Alex was very much a part of making this happen.

I hadn't seem him for a while - me & Tarl have both been in London for quite a few years now, he was down in Brighton. But he was very much always part of the same family. No-one we knew had a bad word to say about Alex. Friendly & genuine bloke, he did it simply because he loved it.

I personally didn't even know he was ill. He had heart trouble which ultimately took him from us, at an age way way too young - which is the thing that cuts the most.

Salute Alex, you will be missed mate, may you rest in peace.
Our thoughts go out to his nearest & dearest.
Bobby & Tarl x

The Nextmen Episode 20

The Nextmen are back with Episode 20!./.. cant believe how many they have banged out so far!... Peep track one.. :)

They quote : Hello humans. Thanks for the curry based lowdown. We've nabbed all the info and will work our way over land and sea one massaman at a time. Big respect. Currently in the house of The Nextmen, we (moved en masse by the cultural zeitgeist of the entire waking world right now, and a few very persistent 6 year olds) are learning about superheroes. A is for Ant-man. Ant-man could shrink to any size and wore a cybernetic helmet which helped him communicate with insects so he could order them to attack his foes, the Masters of Evil. He was tragically killed by an exploding Jack of Hearts. Take out all the connective tissue from those sentences and it reads like a list of breaks DJs circa 2006. Incidentally, Ant-man was an electronics technician and adventurer - add those to the role call, nuff said. This month's podcast features bioelectric blasts from Mo Fingaz (he loves Dubstep), Rudimental, Disclosure, Jessie Ware and Sleeping Giantz to name a few. Holler. Next month is B for Blastaar, mates with Wizard and the Spaceknights of Galador. Seriously...
