Salute To Chris Lighty
One of the great players in this rap game, Chris Lighty managed a whole bunch of the greats.
Hugely respected in the industry, he worked his way up from the street, carrying crates for DJ Red Alert, to be mentored by Russell Simmons & Lyor Cohen, to eventually become a man responsible for serious power moves, shaping the careers and striking big deals for some of the biggest Hip Hop artists in the world, as part of his own management firm Violator, and working with every major label in Hip Hop at some point, with artists such as Nas, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest, 50 Cent, LL Cool J and beyond.
In his own words recently, on his twitter page: "Hip Hop, your blueprint generation is passing away. Embrace them now. It's now or never".
The dubious nature of his alleged suicide will no doubt be discussed for some time. His importance in the game will remain unquestioned.
He was 44 years old.
Rest in power Chris.

Bye Baby
Break-up songs must make up a good third of the subject matter of twentieth century music. Not too many in Hip Hop though. This one's pretty real though. Rappers are partial to just putting it out there. No shame in their game.
Enlisting your ex-missus' dress and wheeling in Guy's Aaron Hall to sing the hook in the video are both pretty fucking massive looks to be fair. Quick follow up to lipsing Nicki Minaj in her last video too. On all accounts... Props.

The Art of Rap...
On his recent visit to London to promote his new documentary From Nothing To Something: The Art Of Rap, Gangsta Rap pioneer, actor and now documentary director Ice T took some time to talk to the good people at Soul Culture, dropping gems of wisdom on the absence of newcomers in his film, the competitive nature of the genre, innovation in the future of rap and more...
Shouts to Soul Culture for the video
DOOM's Wack Move...
It seems that once more the man behind the mask takes liberties regarding turning up for shows...
Fans of the masked mysterious Long Island rapper MF Doom were left with a sour taste in their mouth this weekend as the rapper sent a "imposter" to DJ at a London gig for him. Fellow London Hip Hop promoters, Livin' Proof had booked DOOM for an intimate DJ gig on Aug 25th in a small East London venue. After booking the rapper legitimately through all the correct avenues, Livin' Proof were held to ransom as DOOM or DOOM's people demanded more money and claimed he would only turn up and sign autographs instead of the DJ set he had been paid for. Then as stated before, he sent a fake DOOM to the venue to DJ. WTF?
Indeed WTF? To be honest, this whole fiasco pissed us off. Mad disrespectful.
Especially for an artist of DOOM's calibre, who so many people (including ourselves), LOVE what he is all about. I mean, the dude earned himself his own genre in my iTunes library for fucks sake. How hard is it to come and spin some tunes for an hour to loads of your fans? For probably quite a substantial fee.... IMO - TOTAL Wack Move.
Livin' Proof's Statement is here to read:-
"To everyone who came down to our Livin’ DOOM event on Saturday and are questioning whether that was the real DOOM – we are in the same position as you. We had a legitimate contracted gig from his official booking agent and were in contact throughout the booking process with his US management, and label. We were even talking and working with the promoters of DOOM’s forthcoming London live shows in October and November.
As far as we were concerned, the real DOOM was going to appear… we received news from DOOM’s management on the morning of the gig that DOOM wanted more money or he would not show up. This show was done and intended as a very special and intimate show which was not about making money but putting on an incredible party in a very small capacity venue. As we wanted the show to go ahead and was left to ransom to this extortionate request, we agreed this even though this was a breach of our agreed contract. In hindsight, we should have cancelled the show then and there…
At 9.30pm after we had open the doors, we were told by management that he would appear but would not DJ and was just going to sign autographs. We said this was unacceptable as we had agreed and paid for a DJ set… 10 minutes later we received a call saying that he would DJ… Or that’s what we were led to believe.
As many of the people in the venue noticed, there is a very strong possibility the person that was finally sent down was not DOOM himself.
Doing this show has taught us a lot about how some artists operate and how they feel they can treat others and, most importantly, their fans. As fans of DOOM ourselves, this has left a very sour taste in our mouth.
Anyone who has been to Livin’ Proof parties always know that we do our utmost to provide the best quality show and we are so sorry for anyone who came down and were disappointed by the DJ set from the artist supposedly meant to be DOOM.
We will do our utmost to make this up to anyone who purchased a ticket for this event. We paid the fee upfront to Daniel Dumile’s bank account and have the receipts to prove this. We will be seeking legal advice and are doing our best to get his show fee refunded from DOOM and his management and will then take suitable steps after this action.
All the best,
Livin’ Proof Crew.

Sorry that you had to deal with that shit.

What Profit Remix
New banger from Detroit's song child Dwele and ATCQ's Phife Diggy Dawg.
New Album to drop soon....
Occupy The Session
’Occupy The Session’ is yet another first class release from the UK’s #1 label for new Dub. A summery tune full of bouncy bass it is sure to get people smiling and on toes skanking throughout the sumer of 2012. Reggae Roast’s eleventh release is the first official production by label boss Jim Moodie. The track is a collaborative effort between Moodie and UK production legend Nick Manasseh and features one of the most respected singers of his generation; Earl 16. The release sets the tone for a string of productions under the already well established moniker ‘Reggae Roast’, but this time as a production outfit as well as a label and continues the trend for the movement releasing the highest calibre roots music with cross genre appeal through its ruff and tuff remixes.
Each remix takes the track in different directions showing the versatility of the labels sound. Adam Prescott and Noises (Black Butter Records) show why they are both hotly tipped for big things in 2012 and give the release significant cross genre appeal.
Earl 16 has become one of the most revered Reggae singers of his generation and has been an integral part of the Reggae music industry since the 70’s. His recordings have been produced by names such as Linval Thompson, Lee Scratch Perry, Augustus Pablo, Clement Dodd & Sugar Minott. He’s currently touring with Leftfield as the live front man for the band after guesting on a number of their infamous tracks in the 1990s.
Reggae Roast is a leading light in the new generation of dub music. With DJ bookings across Europe and a steady release schedule featuring some of the hottest talent around, 2012 is set to be their biggest year yet. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming releases featuring artists such as Hollie Cook, RackNRuin and Congo Natty. More Fire!

Crew Clash
Since it’s genus Hip-Hop has been all about the competition. Whether sound-systems going head to head in a New York park, MC’s going verse for verse in a basement club, b-boys throwing down on a piece of cardboard or a DJs going to battle on set of decks there is always an element of one-upmanship that is all part and parcel of Hip-Hop.
Tonight we have two DJs from three of London’s party throwing Hip-Hop crews all going head to head in a test of skill, style and crowd rocking that is sure to be a real treat for those that like to party.
Representing for the longest running of the crews, The Doctor’s Orders, are Spin Doctor & Mr Thing. Having started throwing parties back in 2005 they have welcomed the great and the good of the Hip-Hop world and thrown 100’s of parties in venues up and down the country. Tonight they will be showing what has kept them on top for so long.
Main Squeeze is not only the collective name for DJs Mo Fingaz & BobaFatt but also a blog and a party that has it’s roots in Bristol but can now be found at Big Chill venues amongst other spots in the capital. With a keen ear for combining the new with the old you can expect a classic boom bap with blended with the latest hype artists.
The self-styled ‘London’s Freshest Hip-Hop Collective’ Droppin’ Science have been rocking shows and airwaves for the last 3 years including regular nights at Proud & Visions Video as well as their popular podcast every month. Repping for their crew are core members, brothers and DMC/ITF champions Matman & Daredevil whose technical skills will set them in good stead as they try to bring the house down on their side.
With each crew playing 2 x 1 hour sets it is sure to be a whole night packed with great music as London’s Hip-Hop scene show and prove.

The Glorious Dead
Coming up through the Bath music scene, we at Main Squeeze take a lot of sincere pride everytime we see someone from the South West come up and successfully smack the world with their creativity.
This is absolutely the case with this lot - perhaps the most of the lot, this band are very near & dear to our hearts.
If you don't know about The Heavy, google them.
Their fusion of Funk, Rock, Blues, Reggae & Hip Hop is exemplary of the sounds we've represented over the years.
From seeing these guys around the city individually, to regularly DJing alongside front man Kelvin back in the day, to promoting their very first live show, to see Bristol stand up & take notice, to watch them release two proper albums, to see them get rave reviews in the press, to see them tour the world, to see them prompt US chat show host David Letterman to ask for a rewind (a TV first), to seeing them creep onto more & more major motion picture soundtracks / adverts / TV shows, to hear their track being used on the BBC to warm up the world for Usain Bolt's 100m run a few weeks ago, to watching Kelv get hitched this very weekend, at the sweatiest, duttiest, heaviest wedding of the year...
To say we're proud of this lot is an understatement. This lot are fucking family. For reals.

As we approach the one year anniversary of 2011′s award winning Fela Soul release, we’re pleased to give you a sampling from Amerigo Gazaway’s upcoming mashup project, “Bizarre Tribe: A Quest to The Pharcyde”. Utilizing the original Jazz, Soul and Funk recordings sampled throughout A Tribe Called Quest’s extensive catalogue, Gazaway recreates classic productions – pairing his reinterpreted instrumentals with select vocals from West Coast “golden era” favorites, The Pharcyde.

Giraffes
A pulsating beat rides the mellow groove, booming drums, and electronic grit of J Bizness' latest masterpiece - Giraffes – the perfect sonic backdrop for the ever-elusive artist collective known as The Black Opera. The mysterious mic controllers spit stylish bars that unravel tales of getting high off love and build beautifully on J’s foundation to further flesh out the feeling brought by the beat.
The occasion for such a track? LA’s premier underground beatsmith, J Bizness is taxiing for Tuesday’s take off of his newest instrumental trip Flight Plan. On board for this trip are The Black Opera as well, who happen to have an album of their own debuting on Tuesday with MMG (the critically acclaimed EnterMission. lands on cd).
Enjoy the high.

The New-York native is a rapper with a unique style that has found him fans amongst lovers of true-school Hip-Hop whilst Harlesden's own Iron Braydz is on production duties and weighs in with a verse himself. Wantchu
Gensu Dean, the SP-1200 assassin, is at it again with a new 45 for vinyl heads that pairs the ultimate fast flow track “Ramesses feat. 7evenThirty & Homeboy Sandman”, with a brand new joint titled “Wantchu” featuring the UK-based songbird Olivier Daysoul.
“Wantchu” is not what you would expect from a producer touted for bringing that grimy flavor of 90’s rap back. Instead, Dean proves he can smooth things out just as quickly as he can make them rugged. The Imperial blesses Olivier Daysoul with a silky smooth canvas with just enough head-nod flavor to tie it all together. On his end, Mr. Daysoul lays a thick, syrupy ode to the conflicting feelings of infatuation. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself listening to this one on loop for a while.
Strictly for the collectors, this 45 will go as quickly as it came.

FOOT PATROL x CLASSIC MATERIAL & NORMSKI
Limited edition t-shirt series in store 17th August 2012
Normski exploded onto the public stage in the early 90s as presenter of the groundbreaking BBC2 programmes ‘Def 2’ and ‘Dance Energy’, broadcasting the previously under-represented elements of the UK’s black music & dance music scenes to a new audience. For many years prior to this, Normski had been documenting UK club culture and the rise of hip hop culture in the UK through photography. As a key figure in the UK’s early hip hop community, Normski enjoyed unrivaled access to the rising stars of the home grown scene and high profile touring acts from the US.
Utilising the iconic imagery of Normski’s photography dating from the mid to late 1980s, Footpatrol is pleased to present a collaboration with Normski and partners Classic Material, a London based collective of music makers, designers and photographers. The collaboration takes the form of six limited edition t-shirts featurng five of Normski’s most iconic photographs featuring images of artists Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, Kool Moe Dee, Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and the UK’s Demon Boyz. A sixth t-shirt bearing the Classic Material logo completes the collection.
The launch party, hosted at the Footpatrol store, London is on Thursday 16th August 2012. With DJ's Mr Thing, Chris Read, Nick Armitage & Matman

Doom - KEO
In a matter of speaking, Blake Lethem is the man behind DOOM's mask. Not that he is DOOM, but that he worked with the Villain to design his first and second disguises.
Lethem (also known as KEO and SCOTCH 79) is a Brooklyn-born graffiti writer, designer, MC, and raconteur whose stories go much deeper than his time spent with the Villain.
Domo Genesis
Domo Genesis and The Alchemist‘s collaborative project "No Idols" is without a doubt one of the most eagerly awaited hip-hop releases of 2012 so far. I knew it would be deep before a listen.... The beats from Alchemist are standardly deep and gutter. In my opinion, loads better than the Russian Roulette project.
